The village of San Juan Chivite in Guatemala is located on a 180-hectare farm in the Alta Verapaz region. The farm was abandoned by its former owner during the civil war in the 1980s to be handed over in 1985 to the 65 families who previously worked on the farm. Slowly but surely, the families have switched production from coffee to cocoa and now approximately 125 families support themselves on these plantations, which now consist of 90% cocoa. To reach civilization and sell their beans, the farmers carry the 60kg sacks from the village over the wild Cahabon River via a suspension bridge.
Organically grown on a cocoa plantation where fair working conditions prevail.
